What is nurse delegation?
This is a process by which a non-licensed individual may be trained and monitored to provide medication, therapy or treatment which has historically only been offered by a nurse.
Delegation came about as a means of allowing an older adult to live in a less medical setting while receiving nursing care.
Both the non-licensed individual as well as the nurse delegator must complete course work in the process of nurse delegation. In addition, the nurse must witness and document the non-licensed person's ability to complete the delegated task to a satisfactory level of safety and competency on an on-going basis.
Training, monitoring, and documentation of the caregiver's ability to perform the delegated task is required.
